Creating a Personal Brand

Personal branding became popular after Tom Peters published an article titledA Brand Called You in Fast Company Magazine in 1997. Peters wrote:

“It’s time for me — and you — to take a lesson from the big brands, a lesson that’s true for anyone who’s interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work. Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.”

Personal branding combined with how others perceive you can be an important component in building a successful career. It is evident that landing your dream job requires more than simply submitting a resume. Take time to develop your personal brand. When defining your personal brand ask yourself a couple questions:

  • What are you known for?
  • What is your expertise?
  • What do others think of you, what is the key value that comes to their mind?

After creating your personal brand don’t stop there. Take time to promote and leverage your personal brand. For more ideas on how you can promote your personal brand read 7 Key Ways to Promote Your Personal Brand . Tom Peters concluded his article writing, “It’s this simple: You are a brand. You are in charge of your brand. There is no single path to success. And there is no one right way to create the brand called You. Except this: Start today. Or else.”

The Evolution of Web Design

Over twenty years ago a revolution took place that changed the way that we live today. Tim Berners-Lee developed a tool to make the web a creative space to share and edit information and named it the World Wide Web.  Berners-Lee connected hypertext with the Internet and personal computers. Hypertext enabled users to easily browse web pages using links. Berners-Lee developed a tool to make the web a creative space to share and edit information and named it the World Wide Web.

It can be hard for many of us who use the Internet everyday to imagine a time when websites looked like a series of text documents connected by inline links. Web design has come a long way since the first website was published over twenty years ago. The web continues to grow and today there are millions of websites, none of which existed 20 years ago.

Learn exactly how far web design has come from the early days when pages of text with hyperlinks ruled the web by viewing The Evolution of Web Design infographic.

Interview Preparation

Have you ever left a job interview thinking “I wish I would have said that” or “I wish I would have been more prepared”? Do your homework before an interview. Spend time researching the company and show your knowledge about the company when answering questions. In a survey taken by 2000 bosses, 47% responded that the most common interview mistake job seekers make during an interview is having little or no knowledge about the company[1].

It is inevitable that your interviewer will ask, “Do you have any questions?” Not asking questions shows a lack of interest and preparation. Come prepared with questions to ask. Remember an interview is a two-way street. It is important to make sure that the company is one that you would like to work for. The more prepared you are for an interview, the less nervous you will be. Confidence speaks volumes to a potential employer.
